The first time he set foot in the classroom, he was amazed to see students depicting live nude models in clay a seemingly archaic art form he had only seen in books. He now resides in Laguna Beach, California, where he has lived since attending the Laguna College of Art and Design (formerly the Art Institute of Southern California). Pearson’s work is featured in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and Victoria and Albert Museum.Īndrew Myers was born in Braunshweig, Germany, and raised in Ciudad Real, Spain. He’s currently engaged in a stunning initiative to foster and create underground ideas and visuals in selected nations that are unfriendly towards the United States. Pearson works actively with strategic NGOs on human rights and poverty issues-providing poignant inspiration for his creative work. Now living in Southern California, Pearson finds himself strangely interconnected to the urgent crises of the outside world, yet encased in a bubble of comfort and luxury. Over the last five years however, he has worked on campaigns and documentaries addressing the global issues of modern slavery, aids + orphan epidemics, hunger and human rights. While living in New York City, Pearson created album art and then editorial fashion and music magazine visuals-all powerfully represented in his art. His work is reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism and his style has been described by some as capturing features of artists ranging from Edward Gorey to Egon Schiele. ![]() A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer into their introspective thrall with a mixture of capricious poetry, wit, and mystery. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales. “My pieces often contain hidden private jokes or secret messages, or even simple humorous/futuristic cityscapes.Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Many of David’s pieces are layered, etched, scratched, splattered, and scraped, with washes, and vague symbols and figures added, while others pieces may be only slightly off from realism. After his first figure drawing class, he decided to focus exclusively on art.ĭavid was greatly Influenced by his painting instructor Gary Pruner, and tends to focus mainly on bold pieces with hyper-pigmented impasto and some form of abstraction. Inspired by these wonderful artists and educators, David returned to school to study drafting, landscape design, and fine art. It has allowed him the opportunity to meet and occasionally collaborate with many local artists such as ceramicists Deborah Pittman, Donna Billick, and Bunny Jean Cunningham, painters such as Marie-Therese Brown, Andrea Johnston, and Binuta Sudhakaran, as well as dozens of breakout artists through his Studios, Cobalt Salon & Gallery, and All That/Hair Artistry. David’s art and writing have been irrevocably affected by his thirty plus years as a stylist and gallery owner in the lovely, and beautifully quirky town of Davis, Ca.
